Death in the Afternoon
These paintings were inspired by the rich and colourful Spanish bullfights. The ritualistic contest between human and animal remains a fascinating controversy and my work aims to capture the emotion involved in this drama. Without having an opinion about the validity of this tradition, I admire this art form for its theatrical elements. This is a show in full, bold colour. The matadors' costumes called traje de luces (suits of light) are complex and adorned with embroidery, tassels and reflective beads - true works of art. The matadors' agility is unfathomable in such tight attire. These costumes are juxtaposed against the muscular strength of the fearless bulls. The red capes or muletas and the red paint of the bullrings hide the blood of the fight to the death. And it is not always the animals' blood that gets spilt. More on bullfighting.
