Forgive and Forget
Artist statement
This project is concerned with working through personal trauma dealing with ways to remember and ways to forget. Our previous experiences can be a ‘lens’ with which we view our current experience and future events.
Using thread, cloth and paper as metaphors for mending and repairing, connecting fragments of words, places and images of forgotten memories in order to digest past trauma. Artmaking becomes the healing ritual to reach a point of redemption.
We are our memories, but the challenge is to capture and make sense of our memories of events and work through emotional hangovers. Some memories fade away; some remain hazy; and some change over time. Memories are triggered by music, photo's, notes, journal entries etc. We sometimes just want to sweep memories under the carpet, but this will bring no healing because unhandled memories will surface and resurface. By facing our memories and emotions will create a map back to wholeness and redemption.
