Artist Statement: Series - A History of Madness in Four Chapters

This series explores how memories of certain past events fade into oblivion, healing oneself through the grieving process and sometimes leaving one teetering on the brink of madness. The remnants of fabric and yarn become the artefact of broken memories. The process begins with denial, believing that everything is going to be okay and that there is no need to be alarmed, depicted by the first work in the series. The process quickly jumps into a state of bargaining, almost turning into a game, depicted by the second work in the series. The debilitating state of perpetual hopelessness is key to healing the psychological wounds, depicted by the third work in the series. The process is completed when redemption is reached and all memories are packed away and finally forgotten, depicted by the fourth and final work in the series. Memories and the healing process are abstracted into yarn stitched through fabric, also portraying new skin forming over old wounds. The rawness of the pain is translated using the colour red. Writing about trauma is believed to assist with the healing process. Torn up letters and words are used throughout the series, recording the process of consuming the thoughts and emotions of certain past events. Images printed on fabric and transparencies are layered over each other symbolise the concealment of the reality of the events and support the denial.
